Universal Periodic Review of Sri Lanka – 14th Session

Statement by Australia

1 November 2012

Australia welcomes Sri Lanka’s commitment to establish the processes and programs necessary to lead to improvements in the promotion and protection of human rights, including the National Action Plan for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights 2011-2016, and the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Action Plan.

Australia agrees that it is now important for Sri Lanka to achieve measurable, concrete improvements as a result of implementing these plans.

In particular, in the context of implementation of Sri Lanka’s National Action Plan for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights 2011-2016, and the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Action Plan, Australia recommends that Sri Lanka:

  • take action to reduce and eliminate all cases of abductions and disappearances
  • take action to reduce and eliminate all cases of abuse, torture or mistreatment by police and security forces; and
  • take action to facilitate greater participation by citizens and civil society in helping to implement human rights action plans.
