COVID-19: Returning to Australia or Stranded Overseas

As at 9pm AEDT, Friday 20 March 2020, Australia is closing its borders to all non-citizens and non-residents. Exceptions are only for Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family, including spouses, legal guardians and dependants.

If you are scheduled to return to Australia in the coming days and weeks, please confirm your itinerary and onward travel plans with your airline or travel agent as your flight could be diverted to another city or cancelled. Be prepared to make alternative plans.

Anyone arriving in Australia has to undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated facilities in their port of arrival. Quarantine arrangements may vary for each state/territory. Restrictions are subject to change. Visit the Department of Home Affairs website and Smartraveller’s COVID-19: Arriving home page for further information.

We encourage you to follow us on social media.

Overseas and unable to return to Australia as planned

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade invites Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents who wish to return to Australia and have been unable to do so, to register https://covid19.dfat.gov.au/citizeninformation/s/. Please complete the registration process for each member of your family. Please ensure you include any medical or other vulnerabilities affecting you or your family members in your registration.

Registering:

  • helps us better understand how many Australians are seeking to return home, and need consular assistance.
  • opens another channel of communication for our embassies and high commissions to use to let you know about flights, if and when they become available.

Your registration does not guarantee we can facilitate your return to Australia.

Stranded in Switzerland during COVID-19

Swiss authorities advise all foreign travellers to contact the Cantonal Office of Population and Migration in their area to request a temporary permit/extended visa. A full list of cantonal authorities can be found on the Swiss Office for Migration website.
