Human Rights Council - 30th Regular Session

Annual Half-Day Discussion on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Australian Statement

22 September 2015

Australia is continuing to give effect to the Outcome Document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.

Australia has introduced or continued actions relevant to the Outcome Document, including practical approaches to addressing Indigenous disadvantage through both mainstream and targeted programmes, funding indigenous delegates to participate in international fora, and our continued support for the UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples.

Recent activity includes the launch of the comprehensive Indigenous Peoples Strategy by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Under this Strategy, Australia will work in collaboration with our international partners, and with Australian Indigenous people, communities and businesses to advance and promote the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples around the world.

Another example is the development of a plan that sets out tangible actions to improve life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with disability – this will sit alongside the National Disability Action Plan 2010-2020.

Australia will continue to identify and implement ways of achieving tangible improvements in the wellbeing of Indigenous Australians and will continue assessing progress against the World Conference Outcome Document.
