Human Rights Council - 28th Regular Session

Panel discussion on technical cooperation to support inclusive and participatory development and poverty eradication at the national level

Australian statement

25 March 2015

Australia welcomes the opportunity to discuss the use of technical cooperation to support inclusive and participatory development and poverty eradication.

Australia is committed to contributing to sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction and in strengthening our gender equality and women’s empowerment through the use of our technical cooperation assistance.

Australia invests in targeted programs to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through our Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development program, we will continue to enhance women’s voice in decision-making and leadership, increase women’s economic empowerment, and seek to end violence against women and girls.

In addition, the Development for All: Towards a Disability-inclusive Australian Aid Program Strategy has guided our approach to ensuring that people with disabilities - who can be among the most disadvantaged - are included in, contribute to, and benefit equally from development efforts. Guided by this strategy Australia provides technical support to Disabled People’s Organisation to build their capacity to better represent people with disabilities.

Through Australia’s aid program we seek a nuanced and context-specific approach for the use of technical cooperation.

Australia welcomes the panel’s views on how states can ensure that technical cooperation is based on clear aims and objectives, and is also sufficiently flexible and responsive to the dynamic and unpredictable process of change at national levels.
