Universal Periodic Review of Cape Verde

The Government of Australia commends Cape Verde for the establishment of the National Commission for Human Rights and Citizenship (NCHRC).
However, Australia shares the concern of the Human Rights Committee that the mandate and functional capacity of the NCHRC need to be strengthened in compliance with the Paris Principles.
Australia acknowledges that Cape Verde is taking steps to achieve this, as reported earlier today and to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
Australia recommends that the Government of Cape Verde ensure that the NCHRC has the necessary resources to comply with the Paris Principles.
Australia commends Cape Verde on its constitutional review process, in particular the progress made on gender equality.
Australia looks forward to the full implementation of the updated National Plan to Combat Gender-based Violence in 2013.
